Hi everyone.... it's finally the weekend yayyyy!
I hope everyone is really well and is having a lovely and enjoyable Saturday so far. I thought I would bring something new and exciting to the blog and bring forward the idea of style evolutions. I thought that each week I could inject a bit more fun into my blog by delving in to the different styles of different people through the years. I think you might all know by now that I am a massive fan of the Arctic Monkeys so I thought, there couldn't be a better way to kick this off than to do the style evolution of the main man himself - Alex Turner.
The Arctic Monkeys were formed in 2002 with the band consisting of the main man Alex Turner who is the lead singer and guitarist. However, the release of their latest album 'Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino' which was released in 2018 allowed a break from the common guitar and bass tracks that we are used to and brought forward tracks that were very much centred around the piano. We also have Matt Helders who is the backing singer and drummer for the iconic band along with the guitarist Jamie Cook and the bass guitarist Andy Nicholson.
On June 13th 2003, the Arctic Monkeys preformed their first ever gig in their hometown of Sheffield in a pub called 'The Grapes'. They made £27 from ticket sales that night which is really quite incredible when you think about their sell out tours and shows that they have done since all over the world. At this time, the Arctic Monkeys were still very young and were beginning to embark on their journey in the music business. They would wear things like normal T-Shirts and Jeans without particularly having an individual sense of style. In these photographs we can see how young the boys look with Alex Turner rocking a plain shirt and the rest of the boys wearing relaxed, comfy clothing such as the Adidas T-Shirt that Jamie Cook is wearing. Polo shirts were also quite common in Turners wardrobe at this time.
In 2007, Alex Turner began dating fashion designer and model Alexa Chung. In this year, he also began a second band with Miles Kane named 'The Last Shadow Puppets'. This was a great period of time for Alex Turner and the Monkeys as they had already had their first number 1 hit song in the charts (I bet you look good on the dancefloor) in 2005 and had released two fantastic and highly popular albums with 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' being released in 2007 also. During this period of time I think that Alex began to experiment with fashion a little bit more and really evolved. He began to make a few more fashion statements with the classic double breasted blazer and a more polished suited look. Furthermore, one of the pictures I have included is from the music video 'Standing Next To Me' (my all time favourite Puppets song) and the look they are going for really reminded me of something that the Beatles would wear. It looks very timeless and classic and brings me back to the older times. It makes me feel very nostalgic.
After this era, I really feel like Alex Turner began to evolve in to the real rock star with his quiff hairstyle, leather jackets and shades. I loved this period of time as all of the outfits look so put together and fashionable and for me, they all tell a story and have a strong identity. This was also a very memorable time for the Arctic Monkeys as they drove Glastonbury wild in 2013, sang a medley of songs including the classic 'Come Together' by the Beatles to open the London 2012 Olympics and Alex Turner really represented that strong rock star in his brit awards acceptance speech with the unforgettable mic drop.
Alex Turner also delivered some amazing outfits throughout 'The Last Shadow Puppets' days. Striking colours, John Lennon esc glasses and swept back hair was the look presented to us. If we compare this to the early Arctic Monkeys days, we can see how much his fashion has evolved with his flair and personality really shining through.
Finally, we have now. Alex has promoted many different hairstyles during his time but during the time of the 'Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino' album release we saw a much more relaxed look being put forward. It really tied in well with the Sci-Fi feel to the album and presented Alex Turner as we had never seen him before. Especially in the photograph I have added of them as a group, they all look very elegant, stylish and cool. There is a grungy, indie feel to this look with a touch of back dated class. I love how his fashion identity has taken so many different turns and how it has got stronger over the years. Also, in 2018-2019 we saw a new look entirely as he rocked the shaved head look. We can also see a bit of his previous style shining through here with the classic shade style he has worn over the years.
Thank you everyone for exploring Alex Turner's style evolution with me today! I hope you enjoyed it.
