The Christmas holidays...

niamhdouglas

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well :)

I cant quite believe that we have made it to the Christmas holidays already and have broken up from university. I wanted to talk about the course and what I have loved about it so far. It is really crazy to think how much we have done at uni already. It still feels like yesterday I started a new chapter of my life in Nottingham.

I always knew that I wanted to study fashion communication and promotion. I just feel really passionate about everything we cover and learn and back at sixth form I knew that fashion was something I really wanted to gain more knowledge on, it is one of the things that I am truly interested in and everything about it makes me feel really happy.

I was so super nervous about starting uni, I didn't quite want to leave behind my school and sixth form life as sixth form was one of the best and happiest times of my life. I loved my teachers there so much and couldn't quite believe it was all over. However, even though I struggled in the beginning, it was really worth it because I really enjoy uni so much and everybody there is so lovely. I really enjoy the lectures, seminars and learning new things. I especially love doing this blog, its such a great escape and it is so fun to just sit down and write.

One of the first things that we did when we started the course was making two mood boards on the positives and negatives of a particular colour. It was either black, pink or gold and the colour that I was allocated was pink. I found this task really fun. I thought to begin with, oh my gosh, imagine if I'm not very creative and do a really rubbish job!! It was actually a really enjoyable task, not only do I love the colour pink but it actually made me realise that I love making things and being creative. I included things like men wearing the colour pink. I chose some men on the catwalk but also people like Elvis and Alex Turner to show that men wear pink too. Pink is stereotypically seen as a woman's colour so I wanted to show that anybody can wear it and I thought the best way to demonstrate this would be to show influential men wearing the colour. I also included some flowers from a wedding scene because the colour pink also stands for unconditional love and I thought that a wedding would show this. It was nice to just sit with my earphones in putting pictures together in a nice, interesting way.

After this we started to do some group work. Everyone in my group was so kind and it was a really nice way to make new friends. We continued with a colour, we chose gold. We had to produce a photograph and we wanted to show something all about material worth so we used one of the girls in our group as the model and painted half the face and hand in gold paint. This was really fun. I helped with the face painting and it was actually really therapeutic. In one of our seminars everybody put up the photos that they had produced as groups and we all went around with post it notes and wrote what we thought about them. It was also a really fun and enjoyable task.

We also had to present things a few times and it was so nerve wracking but I feel like it helped with my confidence. It would always be in one of our lecturers and a little group of people from our course. It was nice to be able to watch others present too and pick up tips from this. The different things we did surrounded the trend 'active'. We had to make mood boards on history, shops and people and we learned from this how to do good primary and secondary research. We presented this and then one of our other tasks was surrounding 'active', Liberty London and space. We learnt how to generate ideas without jumping straight to an outcome and we decided to do a world food bizarre as a social escape from the chaotic city lifestyle. We got some really nice feedback after we presented this which was a really lovely thing.

These are just a few of the things that I have really enjoyed so far about my course and being able to let my creativity shine a bit more through my workbook too. We have done so many more amazing things as part of the FCP creative process and everything has been brilliant.

Next on my agenda is to tackle my project that we have been given to do over Christmas. Ill talk about this more in another blog post and I will do this in a series of different blog posts... keep your eyes peeled.

Here's to a lovely New Year. I cant wait to see what we get up to next year.

Thank you so much for reading everybody,

Niamh x
